our Process
The process for building our Citywide preservation plan will occur in 4 phases:
assessment, outreach & visioning
Phase 1 is where we start to study the City’s existing preservation efforts and build a vision for how to create a more inclusive future.
During this phase, the project team will be reviewing existing strategies as well as legal bases for preservation at the local, state, and national levels. The project team will meet with and gather feedback from City staff, topic experts, and community members. Community outreach will help shape the goals of the project.
Analysis & Planning
Phase 2 is where we dig into the analysis of existing plans to determine what to keep and what to leave behind.
The project team will review existing City of Detroit preservation policies and management plans. This review will help identify opportunities for the stewardship of city-owned historic properties, obstacles for rehabilitation, new development, and factors contributing to building demolition.
Recommendations
During Phase 3, we will draft ideas for new strategies and revise plans based on the assessment and community feedback received in Phase 1, coupled with our research and analysis of Phase 2.
These recommendations will guide the direction of: future historic resources surveys, historic districts, policy revisions, preservation incentives, and city code revisions, and guidance within the Master Plan of Policies with the City of Detroit.
Final Plan
And finally, the work is done! The final plan will be a document that serves as a tactical and visionary north star for preserving Detroit for future generations.
The final plan will be a culmination of the recommendations and work completed in the previous phases into a comprehensive and user-friendly planning and policy document.
